On May 16th we had the opportunity to celebrate four decades of great Vancouver theatre with our friends at <a href="http://www.touchstonetheatre.com/" target="_blank">Touchstone Theatre</a>, who are also celebrating their 40th Anniversary this season. We had Rachel, our Community Engagement Coordinator, run around with Mark Halliday of Moonrider Productions throughout the night to grab photos of some of the many people who have worked with each company. Thanks to everyone who participated, and to <a href="http://www.moonriderproductions.com/" target="_blank">Moonrider Productions</a> for these excellent photos! Here they are!</div>

As we celebrate 40 years of engaging material, we thought it fitting to hear from some of the stellar artists who have worked with the company, both in its early years, and today. Enjoy!<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Green Thumb Theatre - Then and Now...</span><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Susan Rome – <i>Feeling
Yes, Feeling No</i></b><br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Thirty three years ago, in 1983,
my dream came true when I was hired by Green Thumb Theatre as an actor/educator
for the production of Feeling Yes, Feeling No: A Sexual Abuse Prevention
Project. Three actor/educators and a stage manager were given a year-long contract
to work in 20 schools, two weeks in each. This two-part show had been developed
by a group of actors and educators the previous year in response to the
nightmare of Clifford Olsen who had kidnapped, abused, and killed 12 children
at random in the Lower Mainland. When we began Feeling Yes, Feeling No, we
actors knew nothing about sexual abuse, let alone how to prevent it. It was a
steep learning curve on many different levels and it changed my life. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The response to the work in the
schools was phenomenal. We were giving children the right to own their own
bodies, the permission to say no to unwanted touch and the skills to tell an
adult. We not only trained children but their parents and teachers too. It was
revolutionary work at the time. It felt like we were riding the crest of a wave
that kept growing in momentum. Most importantly, we felt like we were working
against the growing fear that had developed in the region and we were replacing
it with positive, active and invaluable life skills.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Green Thumb Theatre was created by Dennis Foon and Jane Howard Baker 40 years ago to give children a voice, and
the company has remained true to its foundation ever since. On the occasion of
my 60th birthday in two weeks I can honestly say that my work at Green Thumb
was one of the highlights of my wonderful life where I learned in the trenches
how to combine art with true social change. Happy Birthday Green Thumb. May you
continue your important work for another 40 years. </div>

I worked with Green Thumb as an actor during the mid-‘80s,
at the beginning of my professional career. It was heaven, an actor’s dream.
The company was not yet 10 years old, Dennis Foon was the Artistic
Director and I got to work on new plays by John Lazarus: <i>Not So Dumb</i>,
and then a couple of years later, <i>Night Light</i>. </div>

Dennis is a great director and dramaturge, John is a great
writer, and we had wonderful casts. Being in on the creation of new work is a
thrilling experience, and Green Thumb affords it to many, many worthy young
(and sometimes Not So Young) actors. John was open, indeed eager, for
suggestions and ideas. When we came to parts of this brand new play that
weren't quite flowing, Dennis would have us put the scripts down and improvise.
John would watch and at some point a light would go on. “Oh! I see.” We’d have
a new draft of the scene by next morning, sometimes later that afternoon. We
were on toppa tha world. I've rarely had a creative experience to match it. </div>

A memory I still cherish, lo these 30-plus years later, is of going grocery
shopping at the end of a performance day somewhere, turning a corner into an
aisle in the supermarket, and coming face to face with a young boy and his
mother. The encounter interrupted some conversation they were having about
something that had happened at school that day… some play or something. We all
stood still for a second, his eyes popped open wide and he tugged at her sleeve
and pointed. “Mum. Mum! It’s… HIM.” Superstardom doesn't get any better than
that. </div>

I loved all of it. Getting up at or before the crack of dawn
to unload the set in the cold with the Grade 7 helpers, doing the plays twice a
day in echoey gyms, fielding the questions after, driving for hours all over
everywhere, the tight rapport that develops among a company on the road, the
challenge of keeping good theatre alive over a period of months or years. Finishing
work by 4pm and having a pint with my colleagues in the late afternoon wasn’t
bad either. That may possibly have happened… once or twice. </div>

Almost 4 years ago I got an opportunity to work with Green
Thumb again, this time with Artistic Director Patrick McDonald, on <i>People

first couple of performances here in town, and went to load the set back into
the van and suddenly I got this funny, scary feeling. What if… what if my
memories were gilded by the transmutative haze of time? What if Theatre for
Young Audiences wasn't the unending joyful party I remembered from 30 years
back? What if I was too old for this stuff? And … what if none of my colleagues
liked going to pubs in the mid-afternoon? </div>

Like
many others, my first professional job out of school was with Green Thumb
Theatre. We toured Elementary schools performing <i>Night Light</i> by John
Lazarus. The funny, touching play is about overcoming fears: fears of bullying,
loss, and the monsters that live in our dresser. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

In
fact, there is a <i>real</i> monster in a dresser in this play, who comes out
to scare <st1:place w:st="on">Tara</st1:place> (played by Agnes Tong in our
production) night after night. Before the play started, we always invited the
Kindergarten-aged students to see our monster, "Gooj", to show he was
really just a puppet, not scary at all. However, one Friday morning, there
wasn't time to show Gooj to the little ones. We didn't think it would make a
big difference. How wrong we were! When Gooj's green hand peeked out of the
dresser for the first time, a strong reaction started in the front row and <i>cascaded
</i>to the back of the gymnasium. It was all out mayhem. It was intense, but I
think it's safe to say it was also some of the most fun we had as performers on
that tour. The challenge of pulling kids back into the story after they’d met a
dresser monster for the first time was unlike any other I've faced on stage
before or since. <o:p></o:p></div>

Later,
I had the gift of working on a another Green Thumb play called <i>tagged </i>by Dave Deveau<i>, </i>which
was written for high-school aged students and toured for two seasons. We did
that play over a hundred times and there was never a moment in those shows
where the mayhem and fun took over the performance - far from it. In fact,
performing <i>tagged</i> was much more challenging than <i>Night Light </i>because
it was difficult to perceive if the play's messages of empathy and online
responsibility were coming through to the teenaged students. In general, teens
are a more taciturn group than the K-7 set. We always wondered, "Are they
hearing this?" Then, time and time again, after the shows while we took
down the set, audience members would come and talk to us. Students would
quietly tell us that the play depicted something similar to a situation that had <i>just</i> happened in
their school. Administrators would say they recognized their own students in
our portrayals. Guidance counsellors thanked us for "starting the
conversation". We were grateful for these moments.<o:p></o:p></div>

While I was in University in <st1:state w:st="on">Ontario</st1:state> I worked part time with children
with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). I brought my theatre and dance training to
the team and watched as the children responded to an alternative approach to
learning. It was astounding. I witnessed little lights go on in the room as
movement, music and characters came to replace cue cards and worksheets. We all
learn, connect and express ourselves differently, something Green Thumb deeply
understands.</div>

Fast forward four years and I have the extraordinary honour
of portraying Celeste, a young girl with Aspergers, who also has a big beautiful
imagination. Green Thumb and Théâtre la Seizième commissioned Dave Deveau to write <i>Celestial Being (Extra-C</i><span style="background-color: white; color: #6a6a6a; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small; font-weight: bold; line-height: 18.2px;"><i>é</i></span><i>leste </i>in French) to tell the story of

Suffice it to say, this piece changed my life. Green Thumb has a clear voice

challenges they face today. We are all looking for connections and the quality
of connections that this show provided was unparalleled for me as an artist.<span style="background-color: white;"><b><i> </i></b></span>We
reached thousands of kids, many of whom had never seen a live performance in
their life: (I will never forget one teacher remarking that <i>Celestial Being</i>
was like a movie but we are all in the same room!) </div>

We presented Celeste in
French and English, to crowds ranging from 25 to sometimes 500 people at a
time. At times the show was presented with a sign language interpreter, and we
had blind and non-verbal students approach us after the show for a tactile tour
of the set and costumes. At times we had one-on-one discussions with students
on the spectrum who required a quieter environment to share their thoughts. All
these opportunities reinforced in me that now, more than ever, we need to keep
sharing stories of individuality, courage and exceptionality, rather than
focusing on what disables us.</div>

I'm</div>
so proud to add to the legacy and to know that Celeste will certainly be

<span lang="EN-CA">We started off our 2016 tour with a
performance at the International Performing Arts for Youth conference in Montreal, where we presented our show to artists and presenters from around the globe. Not only did it give us a chance to showcase our work, but we got the rare opportunity to see other theatre for young audiences from far and wide. Australia, The UK, The United States, The Netherlands... Those are just a few of the other countries represented at the conference. It was inspiring to see so many artists dedicated to bringing theatre to young audiences, and it put us in really good spirits as we prepared to head back to BC to hit the road in earnest. We also had a hot tip from the<i> Celestial Being</i> team who had been in town just a few weeks earlier about where we should head for some amazing cheese fondue. All in all Montreal treated us really well. </span></div>

The response from students and educators alike has been really positive and humbling. Time and again we've been so happy to see our audiences really wanting to engage in a conversation about mental health. It's a conversation the three of us are really proud to be a part of. </span></div>

<span lang="EN-CA">After three weeks of touring the mainland
we headed to Vancouver Island, hitting a total of eight towns and doing ten shows. The island is stunning - we were lucky enough to get a bit of down time in Ucluelet, staying in our own private cabin, making good use of the barbecue provided to us and getting in some gorgeous beach walks. In Victoria we had the honour of performing for playwright Joan McLeod, whose work is well known to all of us, and whose play <i>The Shape of a Girl</i> was really influential to Rachel Aberle, who wrote <i>Still/Falling. </i>We also got a chance to see <i>The Valley </i>at the Belfry Theatre while we were in town,<i> </i>which was also written by Joan McLeod. The show was beautiful, and also explores issues surrounding mental health. As we chatted about the show afterwards all three of noticed several parallels between the journey of the teenage boy in <i>The Valley, </i>and the one taken by Nina, the character in our show. </span></div>

After just over a week on the island we
made our way back to the Lower Mainland for a few more shows, and then it was time to make our way to Saskatoon! Along the way, we spent a night in Revelstoke, and then in Calgary, where Geoff was able to see a play at Alberta Theatre Projects called Cockroach, and Heather got to enjoy some live music at a place called Mikey's Juke Joint. We figured we couldn't drive through Alberta without visiting the World's Largest Dinosaur, so we made sure to make a pit stop in Drumheller. The statue did not disappoint, but unfortunately the museum was closed while we were there. We were blown away by how truly diverse the geography of Canada is. In three days we drove from the ocean, through the Rocky Mountains, and into the wide flat prairies. Upon our arrival, Saskatoon was experiencing its first taste of Spring this year, so it was a perfect time for a day off to explore the city. This led to us discovering our absolute favourite shop in Saskatoon (if not the world), BulkCheese Warehouse. <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Getting warmed up for Speech Arts!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Last week went off without a hitch, and it was so gratifying
(and relieving!) after all the many months of planning that went into building
these camps to have the first week be such a success. Our teachers, Ella and
Kaitlin, both expressed how fortunate they felt to have their first group of
students be so keen, passionate, and engaged. Most importantly, all of the
students were ready to spend the week learning and playing – two key components
when it comes to making theatre! Kaitlin is our Speech Arts teacher, and was
really impressed at the end of the week to see the students’ growth, a
sentiment echoed by Ella who was teaching improv in our Creative Drama Class.
Ella also remarked on how great it was to see the students’ skills and
friendships grow stronger throughout the course of the week. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For many of the campers, last week was the very first time
they performed in front of any kind of audience. At first, there were
definitely some nerves flying around, especially when they found out that the
week would end with a performance for a group of parents and friends! By the
end of the week however, those very same campers were up in front of a large
audience, sharing and speaking with confidence and clarity. It was pretty
heartwarming for their teachers, their parents, and for those of us on staff
here, to see these kids really take ownership of the stage, and enjoy every
moment they had in the spotlight!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Both classes presented pretty big learning curves for
students, as they were participating in games and activities that were
completely new to them. Both Ella and Kaitlin mentioned how rewarding it was to
see the students progress each day, and watch them ‘get it’ the more they had a
chance to practice their new skills. One of the key elements Ella was working
on in Creative Drama was the idea of taking risks within improv games, and she was
so proud at the end of the week when they were talking about a game they had
just played, and one boy brought up the student who had gotten ‘out’ first in
that game. He said that in the end, that student was actually the biggest
winner, because they had taken the bigger risks!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
At Green Thumb, we have a wealth of experience watching
young people take important lessons away with them after they watch our shows.
This past week has been such a wonderful new experience for all of us at the
company, as we gave young people a platform to experience performing, and got
to see them walk away with a whole new set of skills after just one week. We
can’t wait to see what happens in week two, with a whole new crop of students,
and two teachers who are refreshed and ready to go after a mini-vacation to
Tofino this past week! You know what they say, work hard – play hard.</div>

be produced by the Great Canadian Theatre Company in Ottawa the following year.
<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:placename w:st="on"><i>Moss</i></st1:placename><i> <st1:placetype w:st="on">Park</st1:placetype></i></st1:place><i> </i>picked up the story of Bobby and Tina, the beloved struggling
young couple that first appeared in <i>Tough!
</i>which premiered in the early nineties, produced by – you guessed it – Green
Thumb Theatre. <i>The Crowd </i>once again
picks up Bobby and Tina’s trail but this time we see them set against a
backdrop of a number other colourful characters, which is a big change of pace
as <i>Tough! </i>featured a cast of three
and <i>Moss Park </i>was a two-hander. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">The reason we see Bobby and
Tina in and amongst a large group of people this time around is perhaps one of the most interesting and
exciting things about this project. The idea behind creating this piece was not
only to create another engaging, funny, gritty piece of Canadian theatre (all
trademarks of George’s work), but also to create a piece written specifically
to suit the needs of a post-secondary theatre training program. A common problem
institutes like Studio 58 face is finding contemporary work that has enough
parts to allow each of their students a moment to shine. The financial
constraints faced by producing theatres mean that most are looking for plays
with small casts, typically two to four actors – six if they’re really willing
to stretch the budget. Playwrights, by and large, write to be produced, so we
are seeing a dearth of large cast contemporary plays – particularly in <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Canada</st1:place></st1:country-region>. This
not only puts theatre training programs working with a set amount of students
they need to cast in a tough spot, but also means there’s a hole in the
cultural landscape in general. Watching a large cast play is a completely
different experience than a small cast play. It’s a shame we don’t get to do it
more often. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

</tbody></table>
<span style="font-family: "arial";">The result of this idea and
the ensuing project have, I think it’s safe to say, exceeded everyone’s
expectations. Not only have we created a brand new Canadian play with a cast of
more than 14 characters, but we have included emerging artists in the creation of
a large scale work and connected them with a leader in the Canadian theatre
world. It has been tremendous to watch them learn. The acting company
spent 90 minutes on the phone with George and asked challenging and meaningful
questions. His responses inspired, amused, and at times surprised the students.
I have to admit watching their faces as they spoke with him was a high mark in
my career of developing young talent. Possibly even better is that one student,
an emerging playwright, has been given the opportunity to talk with George on a
regular basis. He has read her plays and provided her with feedback – something
invaluable to someone at this stage in their artistic development. Finally, the students also share the stage with Leslie Jones, who not only brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the process, but also originated the role of Jill in the very first production of <i>Tough! </i>It is always valuable for young actors to share the stage with a veteran performer - there are certain qualities an actor can only gain through years of personal experience and development. On top of the inherent benefit of having Leslie in the room, the scenes she's in were left quite open by George, with the idea being that she would drive the creation of them. This gave the students both a first hand look at a way of creating that exists outside the constraints of the traditional writer, director, actor relationship, and also really challenged the students to stay completely in the moment with Leslie while we built these scenes together, on our feet, in the room. None of this
would have been possible without this project, so before we've even opened I
feel quite comfortable categorizing this project as a major success.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "arial";">And hey – during tech week,
these young artists and I kicked back and played darts on the set. Can that

<span class="s1">Team Celeste has been touring around Saskatchewan for one week now. We’ve already driven over 1400 km, been to 11 towns, and performed 8 shows for more than 2400 students, teachers, and parents! We’ve been extremely fortunate both with unusually mild winter weather, and with wonderfully warm prairie hospitality everywhere we go.</span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">We began our adventure by flying into Saskatoon and promptly meeting up with Roger from Persephone Theatre who was kind enough to store our tour van with all our set, props, and costumes for a couple weeks until our arrival. We then hit the road for our first long drive to the town of Kamsack. Arriving into town late Sunday evening, our only option for dinner was the local Subway, which, as it turns out, was quite the local hang out. </span></div>
<div class="p2">
<span class="s1"></span><br /></div>
<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">Our first day of touring turned out to be a bit of an epic adventure. After a great opening morning performance in Kamsack, we hit the road again to get to our afternoon show in Langenburg. Unfortuantely, our GPS system took us down Highway 8, which we later found out to be known locally as “the gravel highway”. It was a bumpy ride along some quite icy stretches for an hour and a half. By the time we arrived in Langenburg, we had little time for lunch, so it was off to the local Subway yet again!</span></div>

<div class="p1">
<span class="s1">When we finally arrived at our afternoon school, we were surprised to see some odd orange fluid draining out from the bottom rear of our tour van. Luckily, there was an auto service centre just a few blocks away from the school, so after our afternoon show, we took the van in to get checked out. It was diagnosed with a worn out pipe and coolant leak. We had to wait for 2 hours for it to be repaired. While waiting for the van repair, Lauren was able to do a phone interview with CBC radio Saskatchewan about the show and the tour. CBC also posted an article about the show on their website that referenced Lauren’s interview. It’s so wonderful to have the media interested in a TYA touring show and just goes to show how important the themes and messag</span>es of our show are not only for the students, but for teachers and parents as well. </div>

Greetings from Team Celeste in Montreal! Our 2016 U.S./Canada tour is underway... well, sort of. We are currently waiting in standby mode awaiting our visas to enter into the United States. Although the delay has forced us to postpone a much anticipated stop in Vermont, we are making the best of it by living it up here in the wonderful city of Montreal, primarily eating our way through a culinary tour of Quebecois cuisine.</div>

We luckily chose a hotel with pool, so we were able to enjoy a refreshing dip before venturing off to a local restaurant for another fabulous meal. Jordan found possibly the best burger of all-time while Lauren and Susan enjoyed some exceptional ribs. We also enjoyed a wonderful appetizer of popcorn shrimp garnished with actual popcorn! <br /><br />After a month on the road we’ve returned home to Vancouver. Our last few days on the road where a little sentimental. We reflected on the places we’ve been, the amazing food we’ve eaten and the people we’ve met. We’ve been so lucky to travel all over BC and meet some of the most amazing people and we’ve gone to some pretty awesome schools. <div>

<br /><br />A highlight of our trip was when we got a helping hand from the folks at Theatre North West. Our set was in need of some repairs and they offered the use of their facility. From the moment we arrived they made us feel welcomed, the TD John showed us the set for their upcoming production and he recommended lots of good places to eat around Prince George and Kamloops. </div>

<br /><br />I think another experience that will stick with all of us was at one of our shows in Kamloops. We arrived during the lunch hour and met a bunch of students. They were hockey fans, so we got along pretty well. They watched us practice and they gave us a few pointers on how to be better players. Several of the students even showed Jordan how to do a new trick. Lili bonded with some of the gymnastic students and they showed each other their best handstand. <br /><br />Its experiences like these that reminded us why we work in theatre and why we love what we do.<br /><br />It’s good to be home, just over a week of shows left. We can’t wait to make even more memories as we visit more schools around Vancouver.<br /><br /> <br /><br />Sincerely,<br /><br />The Showdown Gang.</div>

We filled our two Kelowna days with Bowling, Lazer Tag and good food… I think we could have stayed in Kelowna the whole month! Nakusp was a beautiful little town surrounded by mountains and lake, our first show there we got in the gym and realized there was a bird stuck in the rafters. We were about 5 minutes from starting the show when a teacher suggested we turn off all the lights to attract attention to the natural light coming from outside and after about a minute of darkness the bird flew right out. Revelstoke is full of skiers and snowboarders. We found ourselves a fun pub on the main strip called The Village Idiot and ate some delicious burgers and soups. Now we are on our 3 day long drive, already done 1 day 2 more to go! Dana is hoping to see a moose she even has miniature plastic moose on the dashboard which is a “good luck in seeing large antlered animals” charm. Today we drive up north! Winter is coming…<br />
<br />
<br />
Sincerely yours,<br />
<br />

The countdown to Green Thumb Theatre's 40th anniversary has begun! One year from now we will celebrate 40 years of bringing professional theatre to every corner of the province, from Fort Nelson to Bella Coola, Port Alberni to Revelstoke. Over the last 40 years Green Thumb has become a force to be reckoned with in the international world of theatre for young audiences. Green Thumb may seem like part of the scenery to BC audiences, but you may not know that we have performed, to great acclaim, in New York, Australia, Mexico, Asia and Europe as well as in every province in Canada and 36 US states. Green Thumb is an industry leader in the commissioning and producing of new plays for children, teenagers and young adults. Green Thumb has premiered over 75 plays, a number of which have been translated into 8 languages</div>

<div _mce_style="margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;" style="font-family: Calibri, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">
In honour of our 40th season we're looking for parents or teachers who saw Green Thumb shows when they were in school and now have school age children seeing our plays. Our plan is to create an archive of community memories to chronicle the impact Green Thumb has had on the lives of BC youth ( 4 million audience members and counting). If you remember seeing one of our shows as a kid we'd love to hear from you, leave a comment on our website <a _mce_href="http://www.greenthumb.bc.ca/index.php/40th-anniversary-countdown/" _mce_style="color: #0fc20f; text-decoration: underline;" href="http://www.greenthumb.bc.ca/index.php/40th-anniversary-countdown/" linktype="1" style="color: rgb(15, 194, 15) !important;" target="_blank" track="on">www.greenthumb.bc.ca</a>, email us (<a _mce_href="mailto:info@greenthumb.bc.ca" _mce_shape="rect" _mce_style="color: #0fc20f; text-decoration: underline;" href="mailto:info@greenthumb.bc.ca" linktype="2" shape="rect" style="color: rgb(15, 194, 15) !important;" target="_blank">info@greenthumb.bc.ca</a>) or give us a call 604.254.4055 and tell us your story. </div>

<br />
This year Green Thumb is taking The Edge Project in a bold new direction. We’re creating an ensemble of 12 teen theatre artists and leading them through a fall session of theatre training modules including voice, movement, scene study, and improv. The group of young actors will be part of the development of a play they will perform at the end of the year. From first idea to full production, the ensemble will be involved in each step of the process. This brand new play will be performed by the Edge Ensemble in Spring 2015.<br />
We are looking for students who are thinking about becoming theatre artists (primarily actors, though writers and directors are encouraged to apply). If you have students who are considering pursuing theatre in post secondary education/as a career, then this is the program for them!<br />
This year long professional training program can benefit the participant greatly with audition prep, as theatre experience on a college application, and as distinctive achievement when applying for scholarships.<br />
We are looking for Metro Vancouver’s best and brightest so let your most passionate students know about this amazing opportunity.<br />

Monologues will be provided on our website (<a href="http://www.greenthumb.bc.ca/"><span style="color: black;">www.greenthumb.bc.ca</span></a>) It is expected that the students will read the entire play from which the monologue is taken. The plays will be available at the Vancouver Library Reference Desk and through Green Thumb<br />
(email: <a href="mailto:info@greenthumb.bc.ca">info@greenthumb.bc.ca</a>)<br />
<br />
The training sessions will take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays after school for two hour sessions beginning in September 2014. The play we’re building will be devised by the ensemble. Once a month throughout the fall, we’ll hold full day sessions on a Saturday to build the play’s content. Beginning in January 2015, full-fledged rehearsals will begin and the play will be presented in Spring 2015.<br />

<span style="font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">This year Green Thumb is taking The Edge Project in a bold new direction. We're creating an ensemble of 12 teen theatre artists and leading them through a fall session of theatre training modules including voice, movement, scene study, and improv. Meanwhile, we'll engage one of Vancouver's promising young playwrights to write an original script, tailor-made for the ensemble. The group of young actors will be a part of the play's development from the first idea to the finished product. This brand new play will be performed by the Edge Ensemble in Spring 2015.</span></span></div>

We've been having a great time here on the Island. The
beautiful drives and comfortable temperatures have made four very happy
campers. Something that's been interesting for us are the candid questions
we've been getting in talkbacks. For instance, a student asked why the incident
that occurred in the play is a "big deal", when things like that
happen at school "all the time". A little background: In <i>tagged</i>, two high school seniors are
interviewed by a police Constable following a party where a mutual friend of the students, Sam, passes
out from alcohol and is photographed and videotaped in a humiliating light.
Sam's life is forever changed when the pictures and videos are put online and she becomes the victim of harassment over
social media. So when a student asked us why something like this is a big deal,
we were initially taken aback. After some reflection we realized this is an
honest and important question - why is it such a <i>big deal</i>? The answer is why the company of<i> tagged</i> choose to work in the Theatre: because you never know
someone else's story. Something that one
person shrugs off can be deeply injurious to another. All we can do is practice
kindness and respect, and know it could be us who ends up hurt one day - and
hope that there'll be someone there who cares.</div>
